Graduates

Congratulations if you have a graduating son and daughter! It has been a long road of learning for both you and your child. Now is an excellent time re-evaluate your insurance needs as your son or daughter leaves your home for college or takes the big step for establishing themselves in this world. Your agent can address many of your questions.

Auto Insurance

What do we do when our child leaves home for college, but leaves the car at home? Do we leave them on our auto insurance? Make sure you call your agent and tell them your student is leaving for college and that they are not taking a vehicle with them, they will add a credit on your policy called Away at School. It credits that driver with the fact that they won’t be driving your cars except when they are at home on vacation or over the summer!

When do we need to take our College Graduate off our policy? In most cases as they begin to establish themselves on there own, they also need to move onto their own auto policy. Contact your agent for more details.

Renter’s Insurance

Whether students live in college housing or rent apartments, they will likely have valuables – such as a computer, TV, stereo and/or video game system – that could be stolen or destroyed in a fire or natural disaster. Parents contact your agent about your students possessions away at school. Each Insurance company have their own policies. Some extend coverage automatically, others require and endorsement be added to your Homeowners Policy. Furthermore, if students live in an off-campus apartment, parents should consider purchasing renter’s insurance through their existing homeowners insurance provider.

Health Insurance

Check with your health insurance agent to see how you health insurance follows your graduate. There are a lot of new laws that have had huge impacts on your students health insurance coverage. Be very careful with Colleges that require their own health insurance policies for their students. They are very limiting and we have seen huge coverage gaps in them.
